Halloween, with its eerie charm and spine-tingling mysteries, has become more than just a night for trick-or-treating. To be honest, it’s one of my favorite year-round destinations to visit!

If you’re seeking a unique Halloween experience, Savannah will capture your imagination and hold you spellbound, making it a must-visit destination for a spooktacular Halloween weekend. Believe me, you won’t leave without a tall tale to tell!

Savannah is a city steeped in history, and with history often comes a few restless spirits and dark secrets. It’s no wonder Savannah is considered one of America’s most haunted cities. As you wander the cobblestone streets and moss-draped squares, you’ll find yourself immersed in tales of ghostly apparitions and unexplained phenomena.

Among the city’s famous haunted locations are the Mercer-Williams House, made famous by the book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” and the Sorrel-Weed House, known for its tragic history and eerie happenings. Savannah’s Colonial Park Cemetery is also rumored to be haunted, making it an intriguing stop for ghost hunters. Definitely not for the “scaredy cats”!

From elaborate setups to professional actors, these experiences are not for the faint of heart. The Alee Shriners Haunted House is an annual favorite for the locals, and they even offer discounts for first responders, teachers, and groups larger than 5! If you’re looking for a more hands-on experience, check out the Paranormal Investigations found at the Old Sorrel Weed House (as seen on Ghost Hunters!) for your chance to get up close and personal with some of the long-ago local residents. Love this tour! 

• Spooky Tours: To fully appreciate the haunted history of Savannah, consider joining one of the many historical tours or ghost walks offered throughout the city. Experience Savannah’s haunted history with a hop-on-hop-off trolley tour. If you’re feeling extra brave, check out the Hearse Ghost Tour and take a trip around the most haunted sites in Savannah in a real hearse! And for those who are straight-up spook-seekers, try an after-hours cemetery tour by lantern at Bonaventure Cemetery and get the spine-chilling stories firsthand from a 30-year veteran.
• Chilling and Relaxing Activities: Halloween isn’t just about chills and thrills. In Savannah, Heavenly Spa offers a Sip, Shop & Spa event that will leave you feeling like the only way you could be more relaxed is if you were dead! For a great night out with a chill vibe, check out Good Times Jazz Bar and Restaurant, or for something a little more upbeat and the chance to sit back and people watch, the Tree House offers great live music. Looking for a more upscale establishment? Head along to Rocks on the River, a rooftop bar (views for miles) that is a favorite with the locals – a sure sign that there are good times to be had!

Most people think of candy when they think of Halloween, but when your sweet tooth is overdone, there are many delicious options to be found in Savannah. These are some of my favorite eateries in the city:

• Brunch or Breakfast: Start your morning off with great coffee, a cool vibe, and delicious baked goods at Savannah Coffee Roasters. For more of a diner-style breakfast, J. Christopher’s is the place to go, or try Mirabelle Savannah across from the beautiful cathedral for amazing waffles. For those vegans among us, you can’t go past the Fox and Fig cafe.
• Lunch and Dinner: Belford’s Savannah serves some of the best steak and seafood in the South and is open for both lunch and dinner.  Sit on the patio for great people watching in the heart of Savannah. For the best Lowcountry cuisine you will find, The Olde Pink House (found in the Planters Inn) is your spot. Delicious food at very reasonable prices, this is deep South comfort food done right. If the atmosphere is what you are after, try Sorry Charlie’s with their rooftop bar. Enjoy stunning sunsets and city views with cocktails and oysters before dinner.
• Sweet Treats (No tricks!): If you find that there is still room for sweets, Savannah’s Candy Kitchen offers Southern sweets and delicious baked treats that everyone will love.

Many of them are housed in historic buildings, such as the Eliza Thompson House or a personal favorite, Azalea Inn & Villas. If you want to make it easier on yourself, the Forsyth Park Inn does a haunted Savannah package that includes tickets to the Sorrel Weed House and an Afterlife walking tour.

• Spooky short-term rental:  On our visit to Savannah for Halloween, we decided to book a historic Victorian-style home that had its own mystery and hallowed vibe of its own. Find your own mystery home at VRBO.  

Staying in the historic district is often the best choice, as it provides easy access to Halloween festivities and allows you to soak up the city’s haunted atmosphere. Plus, this area is very walkable, so a bonus is to see all the beautiful homes with all their Halloween decor.
